Your Tuttnauer Autoclave Just Failed. Here's the Exact Checklist I Use on Emergency Calls

It's usually a Friday afternoon

You're a practice manager, a biomed tech, or the person who got handed the problem because everyone else is with patients. Your Tuttnauer autoclave stopped mid-cycle, the display is showing an error code you don't recognize, and there's a tray of wrapped instruments that should have been ready hours ago.

If you've ever stood in front of a sterilizer with a waiting schedule on the other side of the wall, you know the exact feeling.

I've been doing emergency equipment support for about seven years, and I've worked through hundreds of these calls. Not all of them involved sterilizers—sometimes it's a patient monitoring system that's suddenly alarm-bombing, or a medical imaging system that lost its connection to the network. But the pattern is always the same: a critical piece of clinical equipment is down, and the clinic has to keep running.

Step 1: Confirm the failure state

  • Won't start at all. No display, no door response, nothing. Check the wall outlet, the breaker, and the power cord. I've shown up to no-power calls that turned out to be a tripped GFCI outlet and a coffee maker sharing the circuit.
  • Starts, then aborts mid-cycle. Note the phase it aborted in (sterilizing, drying, exhaust) and photograph the error code on the display. That code is the fastest path to a diagnosis.
  • Completes but fails monitoring tests. The cycle runs normally, but the biological indicator (spore test) comes back positive or chemical indicators don't change. This is actually the more urgent situation—silently under-processed loads do more damage than a machine that just shuts itself off.

Step 2: Find the right manual before you do anything else

This sounds obvious, but in an emergency, people guess instead of look things up. There are two different documents, and they serve two different readers.

Step 3: Run the 10-minute diagnostic

3a. The door seal

Check the door gasket for cracks, deformation, or trapped debris. A compromised seal leaks pressure, and a pressure loss during the sterilizing phase will abort the cycle. It's the most common cause of aborted cycles I see—and it's also the easiest to fix. Cleaning or replacing the gasket is a user-serviceable task on most Tuttnauer models.

3c. Chamber drain and filter

3d. Cycle parameters

Check that the selected cycle matches the load. Running wrapped instruments on a cycle intended for unwrapped items gives you a different temperature and time profile. I've walked into clinics where a single wrong cycle setting caused a week of inconsistent failures.

3e. Cross-reference the error code

Open the manual, match the error code, and read what it says. If it points to a sensor, heating, or steam-generator fault, stop here. You've found your diagnosis—keep running cycles in that state and you risk turning a manageable repair into a full replacement.

Step 4: Draw the line between "fix it" and "call a technician"

Let me be direct about my own boundaries. I'll replace a door gasket. I'll clean a drain assembly. I'll correct a water-quality problem. But I don't tear into steam generators, and I don't attempt sensor recalibration in the field. That's not a lack of skill—it's knowing which side of the line each repair sits on.

If your error code points to any of the following, call a Tuttnauer-authorized technician:

  • Heating elements or steam generator internals
  • Vacuum pump or solenoid valves
  • Electronics or the main control board
  • Temperature or pressure sensor calibration

Step 5: Handle the load and the schedule

While the machine is down, you still have a load sitting in it. This is where decisions get rushed, and I want to slow you down.

Quarantine anything that didn't complete

If the cycle aborted before sterilization completed—or the machine was running with a known fault—treat the entire load as unsterile. Instruments, syringes (all types: insulin, Luer-lock, irrigation syringes), whatever was in there. Label the tray "NOT RELEASED" and move it away from any sterile stock areas.

Know your alternatives before you promise them

If you have a second sterilizer and the load is critical, reprocessing is possible once the primary unit is validated again. But I'm not going to hand you a one-size-fits-all answer, because it depends on your model, your facility policy, and the device manufacturers' IFUs. Chemical sterilants or high-level disinfectants are only suitable for specific, heat-sensitive devices—they are not a substitute for steam sterilization of surgical instruments.

Tell the clinical team exactly what's released and what isn't

In my experience, the most expensive part of an equipment emergency isn't the repair—it's the communication failure after it. A provider who assumes a tray is available when it's actually quarantined is a patient-safety event waiting to happen. Name the load, name the status, and say it out loud in the huddle.

Step 6: Make sure it doesn't happen again

Here's the inconvenient truth I've landed on after years of these calls: most "sudden" autoclave failures aren't sudden, and they aren't random.

Not every call is preventable. But a lot of them are, and these are the patterns I see repeated:

  • Running a "test" cycle on a machine that already failed. You get no useful information from a second failed cycle. You just burn time, water, and a biological indicator.
  • Using whatever water is nearby. Tap water scales the steam generator slowly. The machine doesn't fail today—it fails three months from now, on a Tuesday, in the middle of your schedule.
  • Forgetting that documentation is part of the system. A sterilizer is only as dependable as its last passed spore test and the cycle log that supports it. If you're not tracking both, you're flying blind—and that's riskier than any mechanical breakdown.
