The key feature isn’t the chamber size (which is fine for small instruments) but the simplicity of the interface. The cycle presets are straightforward, and the built-in printer gives you a physical record. In this environment, I’ve seen the Tuttnauer 3870 series and the T-Edge line perform well. These are larger—either floor-standing or bench-top with higher capacity. The key differentiators are the chamber volume (around 55 liters for the 3870) and the ability to run multiple cycle types (gravity, pre-vacuum, liquid).
The EZ10 manual is where things get specific. If you’re running a T-Edge or 3870, you’ll likely use the EZ10 control system. I remember a situation in 2023 where a new lead nurse kept getting “cycle interrupted” errors on their EZ10 unit. Turns out they were loading the chamber too densely—the manual explicitly states minimum spacing requirements. In a busy ward, it’s easy to just pack things in. That was an expensive lesson in reading the manual.

What about the power wheelchair thing?

When this fits
You’re sterilizing glassware, media, pipette tips (yes, that’s where pipettes come in), and biohazard waste. You need precise control over cycle parameters. Your loads are often larger but less frequent.
What I’d suggest
For labs, the Tuttnauer 2840 ELV or 3850 EL are common choices. They offer liquid and waste cycles that aren’t typically needed in clinical settings. The “what is a pipette” question is probably from someone new to lab work—so let’s keep it simple: pipettes are hand-held tools used to measure and transfer small volumes of liquid. The tips (the disposable plastic ends) can be loaded into pipette tip boxes and run through a liquid cycle. The autoclave itself doesn’t touch the pipette body (that’s cleaned with a disinfectant solution).
One detail I didn’t fully appreciate until I ran the numbers: the depyrogenation cycle (used to destroy endotoxins) requires higher temperatures (typically 250°C / 482°F) than standard sterilization. Not all Tuttnauer models support this. If you’re in a lab that does any kind of pyrogen-sensitive work (like cell culture), verify that your selected model includes this cycle. How to Tell Which Scenario You Belong To
Here are the three questions I ask every department head before I start quoting equipment:
- How many cycles per day? Under 6 → go tabletop (1730 / EZ10). 10+ → go larger (3870 / T-Edge).
- What’s the most sensitive item you sterilize? Handpieces and wrapped sets → need pre-vacuum. Glassware and liquids → need liquid cycle. Implants → need validated cycles and good documentation.
- Who runs the machine? Part-time staff → prioritize simplicity. Dedicated CSSD team → prioritize capacity and data management.
There’s no perfect machine. I’ve ordered the “wrong” autoclave twice—once because I didn’t check the voltage, once because I overestimated the throughput needed. Both times, the equipment worked fine for what it was; it just didn’t match the actual workflow. Tuttnauer makes solid equipment, but it’s on us as buyers to match the specs to the reality of the facility.
