I approve medical equipment purchases for a multi-site healthcare group with roughly 140 clinical and support staff. For the past eight years, I’ve also managed the line item that pays for autoclave repairs, validation, and training. Over time, I stopped buying sterilizers based on chamber size alone and started using a written checklist. The version below is what I use before I approve a new Tuttnauer autoclave purchase.

I ask the clinical team to give me a list: What reusable items will be processed daily? Not sometimes, not when there’s time. Every day. If they don’t have a written list, that’s the first problem. A sterilizer is a processing tool, not a magic box.
A laparoscope is a good example. Most people know that a laparoscope is a narrow optical instrument used in minimally invasive procedures. The question that matters for purchasing is: Which of your laparoscopes are labeled steam sterilizable? Some are, some aren’t. If the manufacturer says low-temperature sterilization or single-use, no tabletop sterilizer changes that.
The same logic follows when I search for ‘what is a prosthetic?’ A prosthetic is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part. The practical procurement follow-up is: What is it made of, and what does the device IFU allow? A metal implant and a silicone prosthetic can have very different heat limits. Grouping them under one label causes problems.
Step 2: Separate cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization before you buy anything
Not every medical device is meant for the autoclave. That sounds obvious. In a busy clinic, it isn’t.
Consider a patient monitor. A patient monitor tracks vital signs and has electronic components, cables, and connectors made for cleaning and disinfection, not steam. Manufacturer cleaning instructions usually say wipe with an approved disinfectant, not sterilize. That’s not an autoclave failure; it’s the correct device category. If most of your load is heat-sensitive, a steam sterilizer may be only part of the answer.
Cleaning also is not sterilization. If you have a Tuttnauer ultrasonic cleaner, the Tuttnauer ultrasonic cleaner manual needs to be where staff can find it, not inside a drawer under the old repair invoice. An oversized chamber that is usually half-empty wastes water, electricity, and maintenance hours. I model a normal day and a peak day before choosing.
Step 5: Plan training, load logs, and maintenance before installation
Before the sterilizer arrives, assign someone responsible for setup and training. That person should read the relevant Tuttnauer manual and help create a short written procedure.
- Use a load log: date, operator, cycle number, load description, and chemical or biological indicators where applicable.
- Keep sterilizer and ultrasonic cleaner manuals in separate binders, not together in one pile.
- Schedule preventive maintenance based on usage and the manual.
- Confirm water quality meets the specification in the manual before the first cycle.
This sounds administrative. It’s also the difference between a process I can audit and a hope I can’t prove.
Final reminder: stay honest about what sterilization can and cannot do
If someone asks for ‘100% sterilization guaranteed,’ I don’t approve that language. No sterilizer manufacturer can honestly guarantee every load when operator, water, cleaning, loading, and cycle selection affect the outcome. A proper sterilizer gives you a validated, predictable environment if you run it correctly.
Use the checklist, keep the manuals, question the quote. That’s how I stopped overpaying and under-preparing.
